The American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architecture profession, dedicated to serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment. Based in Washington, D.C., the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has been the leading professional membership association for licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners since 1857. Through education, legislative and regulatory development, professional education, and research, the AIA and its more than 83,500 members express their commitment to excellence in design and livability in our nation’s buildings and communities.
Through more than 300 state and local components (or chapters), AIA members are linked into a supportive network, providing members an opportunity to make a significant difference for the profession.
Local Component
Local components sponsor a wide range of activities, including educational conferences, community service projects, post disaster and urban design workshops, Architect Registration Exam preparation classes, design award programs, and community awareness campaigns.
Our local component, called The Northeast Texas Chapter of the AIA, represents the following counties of the State of Texas:
Red River, Bowie, Franklin, Titus, Morris, Cass, Camp, Wood, Upshur, Marion, Smith, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Anderson, Cherokee, Rusk, Panola, Nacogdoches, Shelby, Angelina, San Augustine, and Sabine.
State Component
State components offer educational conferences and networking opportunities and they play an integral role in representing interests of the membership before state legislatures and regulatory agencies on architecture-related issues.

The national component of the AIA unites local and state members in the common causes of advocacy, community, and knowledge. Networking and national volunteer opportunities are available through knowledge communities and the Center for Communities by Design.
